Who Loves Ya!

Old enough to remember that phrase from Kojak?

I thought it appropriate for this “Month of Love” being Valentines Day is fast approaching.  I do hope that the first person you thought of as loving you was YOU.

Besides doing something loving for the people closest to you, remember to also do something kind and loving for yourself. Since I first opened Enhance Studio in 1988, I am gratified as I see the increasing number of women who now feel that they deserve to spend some time and money on themselves.  Used to be we felt guilty if we did anything for ourselves unless the rest of the family had all their needs met and that just never seemed to happen.

So this month, let’s show you some lovin’ stuff!

STRING 'EM UP

If you have ever considered the “Thread” Facelift you will want to first read the following article written by Darwin Gauthier of the Micro-Pigmentation Centre and appeared in Spa Canada magazine’s February 2007 issue. I loved it for is humour and it’s very straight talking information regarding the “Thread” facelift procedure. Enjoy:

Ever stand in front of a mirror with scotch tape, draw back the skin along your cheekbone, stick it in place, squint your eyes to blur the image of the tape, all to evoke a memory of recaptured youth? Well some of us would have to use duct tape to mould the folds but the point is, it’s a rewarding exercise to mask the wrinkles for that one glorious moment. It conjures visions of days gone by where you sported taut firm skin, and before age and gravity forced the corners of your mouth to hang down like a torn pocket and before your laugh lines gave you that Shar-Pei puppy look. I wanted to know if there was anything available that would grant us these results without putting ourselves through the trauma of having someone elongate our faces and snip off pieces of expression.

By passing my usual research method of surfing the internet in the company of a few liquid friends I chose to go directly to the source and made an appointment to talk with a well-known plastic surgeon thinking I would use my own visage as the canvas to get the skinny on what might be new and not too severe.

The consultation started without chitchat and she got right to the business of explaining various procedures from a mid-face lift to an upper and lower eye lift, Thermage and of course “le grand nip and tuck”. She offered another procedure, relatively inexpensive called the Feather Lift or APTOS Thread Lift or Suture Suspension Face Life which, in explanation, sounded strangely familiar.

Considered minimally invasive and described as a lunch-time procedure, the process was developed in Moscow in 1999 and brought to North America in 2002. I must admit that the thought of a surgeon plunging a trocar, which is a hollow stainless steel tube with a razor sharp end, through the top of my cheeks, then driving it to, and existing at, the edge of my mouth, does not conjure up images of minimal invasion, and while I’m nattering, nor can I say that I’m overly impressed with what they do for lunch in Russia!

Now with this metal pipe protruding from two exit wounds in your face and I’m sure making you look infinitely like a card carrying member of the African Zulu tribe, the APTOS threads, which have cogs or barbs that lie in one direction, are fed through to the other end of the trocar. Once in the correct location, the tubes are ripped out of your skin leaving the threads in place which will then open up and become implanted into the subcutaneous fat when tugged into position. The tissue is fixed faintly in these cogs and is then suspended and lifted. The good doctor told me that over time collagen encases the threads and will actually improve the results of the lift.

In trying to give her a visual, and having forgotten my duct tape, I grabbed a couple of handfuls of loose skin from my face and pulled my Adam’s apple close to my chin giving my features that Saran wrapped, salad bowl look. “Results like this?” I said through a clown stretched smile. “No, like this”, she said as she gingerly fingered some skin at my temple which offered no noticeable change to my appearance other than a smudged powdered mark from her glove.

Apparently complications are infrequent but there is the possibility of the thread end working it’s way out of the entrance to the skin, which she volunteered, is corrected by trimming the protruding end. In addition, she said that on occasion patients may develop a pucker, which to me is a wrinkle, which is what I thought we were trying to get rid of in the first place.

While it sounds bad, these are only possibilities and each area is treated and taped to prevent movement in the first few days. She said that patients should not talk for the first 24 hours and their facial movement should be limited for the first few weeks. Excessive movement can dislodge the intended placement of the threads thereby altering the results.

As I left her office, I had a mental picture of a rogue thread sticking out of the side of someone’s mouth pulling up the corner of their lip giving them that sneering Elvis Presley smile. Can’t you just see some considerate soul approach and say “Excuse me sir, but you have a piece of spinach lodged between your teeth and there’s a wire hanging down from the side of your face”?

LIP TIP

Do you try to exactly match your lipliner pencil to your lipstick colour? Did you know that you don’t have to? Now, of course you don’t want a bright pink lipstick matched with a dark brown lipliner, but you can have lots of fun and variety with many combinations.

All lipsticks have “undertone” shades which can be brought out with the lipliner. A ‘pink’ lipstick used with a ‘coral’ pencil can turn the lipstick into a Coral Pink. Put that same lipstick with a ‘mulberry’ pencil and bring out the ‘rose’ undertones and you have a ‘Rose Pink’.

With ‘brown’ lipstick you can combine it with a soft ‘toffee’ lipliner or a ‘reddish brown’ liner or an ‘orange brown’ liner and you have three very different looks.

So go ahead and play with combinations. We have lots of liners and lipsticks in the Studio and are happy to play with you!

ACNE LASER SKIN THERAPY

Laser therapy for acne is one of the newer treatments and growing in popularity. The following are a few questions commonly asked:

How many laser treatments are required?
A series of 3-4 treatments are recommended to get maximum results. These can be performed as often as once a week to once every 3-4 weeks. You will notice a gradual reduction in the number and severity of acne lesions over the time between treatments.

How long will the results last?
This is a very new treatment, but studies have shown that the improvement is maintained for at least 6 months to a year after the last treatment.

Should I continue using my acne creams and medications?
Most of these can be continued, however our Clinical Esthetician will guide you with specific information for your particular skin.

Can the laser work on other areas of the body in addition to the face?
Yes, the laser has been used on the back area and could be used anywhere acne is present.

How will my face look after the treatment?
Immediately after the treatment, there will be mild redness and swelling in the area treated. This will subside in about one hour. There are rarely any other after effects.

How much will it cost?
During the free consultation you will be given a clear estimate.
