We’re Back to Work!
In the last issue of “Beauty Thru Wellness” (March), Kristie and I
excitedly shared our news regarding her purchase of her very first house
and my long awaited 2 week vacation in Los Cabos.
You know how life just sometimes blindsides you with a two-by-four right
between your eyes? We got blindsided. Both of these ‘milestones’
were responsible for Kristie and I becoming very sick! Here we were, on
opposite ends of the continent, miserably ill on the exact same days.
Are we in sync or what!
I was laid low with the “Mexican Misery”, in bed for four days, attended
to by doctors, IV’s and medication for dehydration, etc.
Kristie’s “new” house was undergoing some renovation during her first
few days of occupancy, which caused old insulation to be circulated
throughout the home via dirty ductwork and lack of a furnace filter. The
result was insulation in her lungs that put her in the hospital with
severe breathing problems.
But hey, we are both strong, gutsy women and it takes more that a
Mexican “bug” and lack of oxygen to put us down! We’re back in the
groove, health restored and very grateful for it.
Even though I was ‘down’ for four days I still had the other 10 days to
enjoy the sun and warmth. But I purposely did NOT come home with
a tan! Why? In my profession I have seen far too many examples of
irreversible sun damage and that’s not for me.
A ‘tan’ is the body’s way of screaming at you. It is saying “damage,
damage, damage!” Here’s how I avoided it. I wore an SPF 45 on my
face at all times and an SPF 30 on my body. Add sun glasses and a visor
and lounging by the pool in the SHADE 80% of the time. Now this is all
well and good, but alone that is not enough. The effective use of
sunscreen means using it correctly. That means re-application
at least every two hours and when exiting the water. It means
applying it thick enough, you should be able to see it on your
skin. It will gradually absorb.
Now here is one tip that is rarely used. If you are wearing a bathing
suit you will need at least one entire ounce of sunscreen to
cover your exposed skin adequately. Most sunscreen containers hold 4 to
6 ounces. That’s 4 to 6 applications! How many of us actually use that
much!? Most of us purchase one bottle in the spring and still have some
left over in the fall.
Most of all we need to change the programming that we have to
return from a vacation with a tan. To prove what? And that a ‘tan’ makes
us look “healthy”. Far from it. We are destroying the skin’s
immunity system, breaking down connective tissue, exploding capillaries,
gouging deep wrinkles into the skin and accelerating aging at a
tremendous rate.
I know we all long for the sun after a dreary winter, but there
are safe and healthy ways to enjoy the outdoors. Try using your
sunscreen differently this summer and see how much your skin thanks you
in the fall.

* * * * * New Treatment!
If Kristie is always on top of new treatments and brings them to you on a
regular basis. Her excitement this time is the arrival of the
Ultrasonic Microdermabrasion Treatment!
• Exfoliates dead, dehydrated skin cells
to reveal fresh layer of cells • Helps reduce discoloration after acne
break-outs. Ultrasonic waves
penetrate into the skin increasing
metabolism of the cells, thus gradually
removing the coloured marks. • Lightens dark spots from sun damage.
• Diminishes puffiness and dark circles
under the eyes. • Penetrates ampoules, serums,
bleaching gels and creams.
What is Ultrasonic Microdermabrasion?
Ultrasonic Microdermabrasion is one of the most advanced non-invasive
mechanical exfoliation systems which painlessly loosens and removes dead
skin cells from the surface.
In addition, the ultrasonic wave will cause a thermal effect that can
penetrate cosmetic products or medicines into the skin. The Ultrasonic
Microdermabrasion 1500 Model comes with a treatment wand that vibrates with
ultrasonic waves at 28,000 cycles per second providing massage that
stimulates and expands the cell membranes in the skin and accelerates blood
circulation and lymph plasma without down time.
Ultrasonic waves travel through the skin and stimulate the underlying cells,
promoting cutaneous micro-circulation. This enhances tissue oxygenation,
increases new cell growth, and stimulates collagen formation. By pushing
specific products deeper into the skin, the ultrasonic wave can induce
micro-ionization of other topical products.
Okay, that’s the scientific mumbo jumbo, but how does it make you feel?
Look? Ahhhh, it feels wonderful. So soothing, almost puts you to sleep. A
very gentle method of removing those dead, dull surface cells, kind enough
for skin that does not tolerate the more rigorous methods of exfoliation.
As for how you will look………….radiant is a word that comes to mind.
Moist,
glowing skin that feels like it really belongs to you!

* * * * * Fight Acne with
Acid
Yes, I know that does sound ridiculous. But, in this case we are not
referring to the caustic acids like battery acid.

When you look at the Ph acid/alkali scale you will see
that it slides from strong acid to strong alkali. All substances fall
somewhere on this scale. ie: blood sits at 7.4 and if it drops below 7.2
we die! Sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid (in your stomach) is in the
strong acid end and will eat away your skin. Baking soda is a strong
alkali.
Your skin sits at about 6.5 on the scale. That is slightly acid. Why?
Well for one reason bacteria does not thrive in an acid environment.
Most over the counter acne products and the over use of them are too
stripping of your skin’s acid mantle, leaving the skin in an
uncomfortable ‘squeaky’ condition. You can over clean and over treat
acne thus contributing to increased inflammation and bacterial
activity.
Note: if your skin or hair ‘squeaks’ after cleansing or shampooing, your
skin/hair is out of balance and is left open to all kinds of
problems.
Tips:
 |
Put ice on an inflamed acne pimple or cyst. Calm the inflammation. |
 |
Use a gentle cleanser recommended by a clinical esthetician. |
 |
Definitely use a non-alcohol/acetone toner to re-balance the skin to
it’s acidic range |
You need the guidance of an experienced skin care professional who will
assess your skin and your unique set of circumstances, your overall
health and diet, stress levels etc. to effectively treat your acne. In
many cases you can avoid the trip to the Dermatologist and the use of
drugs.
