It’s the Merry Month of May!

Ahhh, the first flowers (daffodils with tulips racing to keep up) are spreading their sunny faces to the sky while the cherry trees, magnolia trees, peach, pear and apple trees are exploding with blossoms. I love Spring!

My favourite season brings with it our desire to renew and refresh. Our homes, yards, bodies and minds are eager for change after winter’s long hibernation. The birds are all twitterpatted and our cats “chatter” enthusiastically at them through the windows as little armies of quail march through the lawn seeking tasty ‘bird morsels’. I think I’m staring out the window as much as I’m staring at this computer screen!

On a more personal note, I could use some help. Our dentist retired (after we had gone to him for more than 20 years) and we need a new one. I know from experience that the best way to find one is word of mouth (yuk, yuk, get it?). So if you live in the Vernon area, have been to the same dentist for a few years, have experienced several different kinds of procedures and are pleased with the work, please email me and give me details.

The Fitzpatrick Scale

Many of our treatments in the Clinic, such as peels, IPL, laser hair removal, etc. require knowing where your skin places on the Fitzpatrick Scale. How it got its name is unknown to me, probably someone named Fitzpatrick had a hand in it…duh.

We use this scale to ensure that treatments don’t burn you or leave hyperpigmentation marks. So you can see how important it is.

It’s used by skin care professionals and doctors to determine your skin’s reaction to treatment according to how it reacts to the sun, your skin colour, eye and hair colour. There are six skin types ranging from “always burns, never tans” to “almost never burns”.

For instance:

Type 1: Always burns, never tans. Blue/light green eye colour. Blond/redhead hair colour. This type tolerates the above treatments well, but may hold redness longer.

Type 6: Almost never burns. Black eye colour. Black hair colour. This type requires very careful treatment management to insure it is not over stimulated, burned or marked.

Of course there are 4 more types in between.

It’s interesting to note that the paler skins are actually the tougher skins except when it comes to sun exposure, while the darker skins can be the most sensitive except when it comes to sun exposure.

So when you hear us talking about ‘Fitzpatrick’ in the Clinic, he’s not our Scottish cousin!

While on the subject of hyperpigmentation (brown spots/patches), there is prevention and there is treatment.

Prevention: Don’t traumatize the skin by picking at acne, be certain the professionals performing advanced treatments are well trained, post treatment don’t overheat the skin by working out, hot tub, sauna, etc., use sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!

Treatment: Physician’s Choice peels, microdermabrasion, IPL treatments

Products:

Prescription strength Physician’s Choice Pigment Bar:

This cleansing bar is designed to enhance the results of any PCA pigment control program. pHaze 13 Pigment Bar is formulated with kojic and azelaic acids to combat inflammation and inhibit other causes of hyperpigmentation.

Prescription strength Physician’s Choice Pigment Gel:

Best Gol’ Darn Lemonade in the Whole, Wide World!

With the warmer weather upon us and Summer waiting in the wings, thoughts of picnics, pool lounging, boating and beaching are creeping in.

With better health being one of the themes of our Clinic and this newsletter, I thought I would share with you a recipe for lemonade that has been a favourite at our house for many years. Here’s what you will love about it:

Fast…..easy….delicious….healthy….costs pennies, no lemon squeezing, not loaded with sugar.

So here it is:

SUPER EASY LEMONADE

1 lemon, peel and all, thoroughly washed
¼ orange, peel and all, also thoroughly washed
20 oz. water
1 cup ice cubes
2 tbsp. honey
2 tbsp. sugar (you can work out an equivalent with Stevia)

Place all ingredients in a blender. Blend on high speed for 8 seconds. Strain. Done!
NOTE: Don’t blend longer than 8 seconds or you risk having a bitter taste.

Two batches will produce 1.5 litres.

Enjoy!

HEALTH NOTE: Bioflavinoids are only found in the white part of the rind of citrus fruits, therefore rarely eaten. These compounds (rutin, hesperidin) rocket boost the vitamin C and provide much more nutrient value. And this lemonade uses the rind!

The Allergy/Acne Connection

If there is a downside to spring, it’s the advent of allergy season. Allergy sufferers have my sympathies!

Most spring allergies are very obvious….sneezing, running nose, red eyes, coughing, rashes, itching, but if we take a peek inside the body there is something very interesting going on in there.

The acne-prone person who has allergies will almost always find their acne worsens when their allergies are flaring up. The body is so engaged in dealing with your allergies that it just doesn’t have much left over to deal with the acne as well.

Add to this your levels of toxins (which we all breathe, eat and drink daily) and we find the poor liver is taxed to the hilt. Herbs, homeopathic tinctures, vitamins and minerals in the choices, amounts and potencies recommended by your licensed health practitioner to support and cleanse your organs can go a very long way in improving your acne.

Let’s not forget diet and food choices. Wheat and dairy products can be major culprits in the cause of acne I some people. Try going without them for a couple of weeks and monitor the result.

If you suffer from acne and allergies it is worth getting some professional advice to help give your body some support.

Advanced Sunscreens

Although most times an SPF 15 to 30 sunscreen is adequate, there are those whose very pale skins, skin treatments, prescription drug interactions or skin diseases require a higher protection factor.

Kristie and I are most pleased to announce the addition of Ti-Silc SPF 60 to our sun product line. We have already been supplying Ti-Silc SPF 45 and were excited to learn of the new higher SPF becoming available.

So let’s discuss how much SPF is too much. If you read a label on a sunscreen product, check to see how many chemical ingredients (these absorb UVA/UVB) are present. Those are the words that your tongue simply can’t twist around such as Octyl methoxycinnamate, Phenyl benzimidazole, Menthyl anthranilate.

A list of three or more of these ingredients in a product I would avoid. The discussions around two much sunscreen have to do with too much chemical ingredient and the resulting irritation of the skin. It is much better to increase the amount of physical sunscreen ingredient (these block UVA/UVB) and are simply earth elements. The two to look for are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

A combination of some physical and some chemical sunscreens in a product provide the best protection.

Some features and benefits of Ti-Silc:

SPF 45:

water resistant up to 80 minutes
safety coated micronized titanium dioxide (blocking rays)
all skin types
moisturizes skin
only one chemical sunscreen (absorbing rays)
softens skin
restores smoothness
re-texturizes
lightweight and non greasy

SPF 60:

water resistant up to 80 minutes
sweat-proof, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts
all skin types
blends effortlessly, light weight, no chalky residue
safety coated titanium dioxide
only one chemical sunscreen
potent green tea antioxidants combat free radicals
non-greasy
softens, smoothes, moisturizes
protects from collagen degradation

All ranges of sunscreens are available in the Clinic. We are proud to provide you with the safest and most effective products for your health and protection.

Hand and Body Luxury

Many clients have discovered the pure luxury of our Makes Scents Hand & Body Lotion. We are often asked:

“Is it a body cream?”

“Is it a body lotion?”

It’s a hybrid! Sometimes it acts like a richer cream and sometimes it acts as a lighter lotion. In any way it behaves, it is luxurious!

Here is how versatile it can be:

Use it unscented for those sensitive to fragrance
Use it with our therapeutic, steam distilled, organic aromatherapy essences
Add some of your own favourite fragrance to it
We can add some AHA’s to it and make it an exfoliating hand and body product to loosen and slough dead cells.
We can adding glycolic acid and make it a superb, rich foot cream keeping your feet smooth, combating dryness and callous build-up.
For exceptionally dry hands, liberally apply Makes Scents Firming Serum followed with Makes Scents Hand and Body Lotion, also in liberal amounts, and sit with your hands still for about 15 minutes. Remove any excess or smooth it into the skin. Voila! Amazing.
